October is the month of my birthday, it is also National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month to our attention. While working in the conflict zone near Darfur, Sudan, life and death are very much apart of the culture in Sudan, in a very tragic sense. I met this young mother ( pictured) while she came for a polio vaccination for herself and child. My interpreter asked me if I know what the stick was.... I had not... then he explained that when a Sudanese mother loses a child, a stick is carved as a token of the child- as to never forget the child's life. - When I reflect on how barbaric our culture is and compare it to the natives of Sudan, I have to ask - Who are the true savages? - The young mother was a mother of twins, one had died at birth. The mother shared that she will symbolically breast feed the token and then pass the token to the live child when the child is old enough to carry the reminder of it's sibling through his natural life.
